Founded by an certified and highly decorated model and instructor, The Creative Loft gives aspiring models a taste of the industry, the opportunity the discuss fashion and invaluable tips for looking good before laying down loads of Lindens. SLBR sat down with its owner, RedJess69 and the winners from her most recent event—The Dior Style Contest.

SLBR: What gave you the inspiration to start The Creative Loft?

I have been a certified model in SL for over a year and was seeing a lot of people get frustrated with not getting the opportunity to model as there was no place to just learn the basics. So I offer a place for seasoned models to share and help new people interested in modeling.

SLBR: Fashion is a huge industry in SL with tons of potential to make money, yet your business is non-profit. What’s your reasoning for that?

I am here to help people learn what they want and give them a solid understanding of expectations of modeling in SL.

Is TCL open to newcomers of SL? How can TCL serve as a resource to them?

Yes, it is by invite only at the moment. Interested people can ask for the invite.

SLBR: How can they get involved?

Contact me directly: redtess69 resident

Is there anything else you would like to add about TCL, the Dior Style Contest, or yourself/the winners, that I haven’t asked?

We are a fun group of folks just wanting to enjoy bringing fashion to SL. If you want to model and meet fun people around the world that like to talk about fashion, look for **The Creative Loft** and join us! We also have training facility and a lounge for after show parties.

First Place Winner

Lord Thunder

SLBR: What would you like people to know about you?

Professional loving travel, art, architecture and meeting interesting people..

SLBR: How did you get into fashion?

Wanted to improve my sense of style and explore my creative side. This has spilled over to real life, where I am completely redoing my wardrobe/style.

SLBR: How can The Creative Loft serve as a resource for newcomers to fashion or SL in general?

It can provide basic training and advice to people who are experienced with Second Life in general, but who are new to fashion.

SLBR: Where would you like to see your modeling career go?

I want to learn more about the different styles, and explore my creative side even more. Would like to stand out as being unique, professional, and creative with a distinctive sense of styling. Love to challenge myself with styles such as Avant Garde.

WrenNoir Cerise

Third Place Winner

SLBR: What would you like to know about you?

I am thrilled to have taken 3rd place in the Dior Style Contest by TCL. I loved the concept of asking people without modeling degrees to be contestants. I am a very caring person and always ready to assist anyone, particularly people new to SL.

SLBR: How did you get into fashion?

Through the back door! I am first a photographer in SL and ended up in modeling competitions from submitting nice photos of myself. After that, I was hooked in the fashion business.

SLBR: How can The Creative Loft serve as a resource for newcomers to fashion or SL in general?

Sometimes being new to SL means that you are a bit short on what is in your virtual closet (inventory). TCL can totally help in that department! Besides that, you will not meet nicer and more helpful people. Red is a fabulous and amazing woman.

SLBR: Where would you like to see your modeling career go?

I would most prefer my modeling career to focus on print work. Either magazines or vendor ads. I find the work relaxing, fun, and I have a lovely photo in the end!

SL Enquirer

One real life industry which benefits from virtual worlds and Second Life is the education industry. As a real life educator myself, I have attended real life educational conferences, panel discussions, and have taught university level courses in Second Life.

While the loss of the educational discount for sims in Second Life, forced many educational organizations to close their sims or to leave for more affordable virtual worlds, Second Life still has many educational organizations who are using Second Life on a daily basis for things such as professional development to instructing students.

In a recent conversation with Heavenly Villa, the owner of L’aize Dayz and the organizer for this year’s Home and Garden Expo, prompted–scratch that–demanded that I post it here under the “Genie in a Bottle Scenario.”

You’re walking along the beach at The Docks. You find a brass lamp sticking out of the sand. You rub the lamp three times because that’s what you do when you find a lamp on a beach. A genie springs from the lamp, because that’s what happens when you find a brass lamp on the beach and rub it!

The genie offers you three wishes for Second Life. You respond…in the comments section below.

Admit it. You have said it too.

I think back to my first issue and my very first page. In my Letter From the Editor, I wrote that I would never quit SL. And despite the hyperbolic trickery of my blog’s headline, that remains true now. I’m not actually quitting SL.

I’ve just had one of those stressful weeks–scratch that–months. Fiscal quarters? Pretty much this entire stretch of 2013 has been a bumpy stretch.

Many of you know this, but in my never-ending quest for new readers I will reiterate. I’m the Editor and Publisher of SL Business Review magazine, which is published by inKLine Media–a multimedia company company owned by yours truly. While inKLine Media started in 2011, SL Business Review started publishing in July of 2012 and garnered considerably more attention.

In real life, I am a media professional. During the time when I was sans stable or full-time employment, I launched SL Business Review for several reasons. Most of all, and probably most selfishly, it served as a creative outlet for my writing, journalistic and media habits. Surprisingly, the end game of the business magazine was not profit. I chose to focus that energy on virtual business and economics because the topic fascinates me and its an area that deserves more SL media coverage. It also served as a litmus test for my own business ventures in SL.

Ultimately, I don’t think I ever met my content quotas for the blog a single week. I’ve delayed or printed late just about every issue. As a result of the demands of printing in-world, the blog has often slowed up, and so on and so forth.

This would seem to deem my efforts with this magazine a dismal failure, but I’m very quiet when it comes to my business affairs. In fact, an article in this very magazine has landed me an exciting job in RL doing exactly what I love to do–reporting the news. The business relationship and now personal friendship developed here on SL, between two people removed by a Gulf.

Without naming names, a very prominent SL business owner read an article in our second issue. That was last August. From there, she presented me with a real life opportunity that only an idiot would screw up. And I’ve been called worse!

I’ve been known, especially by my SL friends, to spread myself too thin. In that respect, I believe it’s time for a change for my virtual life.

At this time, inKLine Media is wrapping up Issue 7 of SL Business Review and will publish as soon as its complete. Since our anniversary is just around the corner, we may consider printing a special edition in July. After that, SLBR will move to web-exclusive for a short period of time. By doing so, I believe inKLine Media and SL Business Review will not wither away, but explode with a host of new content after some re-structuring.

With that, I believe that the story of this magazine itself serves as a tale that SL can be a very valuable tool if used correctly. Once you have that opportunity, however, you can’t let it slip away. I refuse to let that happen.

Among the major changes noted in Second Life’s official notice, it amended a portion of the TOS regarding currency exchanges. The release said: “to better protect Second Life users against fraud, the updated Terms of Service make it clear that trading of Linden dollars (L$) on exchanges other than the LindeX, Second Life’s official L$ exchange, is not authorized or allowed.”

The exact rule reads as follows:

5.3 There are other exchanges that are operated by third parties on which Linden dollars are exchanged.

Third party exchanges are not authorized by Linden Lab and Buying or Selling Linden dollars on third-party exchanges are not authorized transactions. Third party exchanges are wholly distinct from both the LindeX exchange and Linden Lab and they have no affiliation with Linden Lab. We do not endorse or otherwise guarantee the legitimacy of the Linden dollar transfers offered on them, and we are not liable for purchases of such Linden dollars. Buying or Selling Linden dollars anywhere other than the LindeX is done so solely at your own risk. If you Buy Linden dollars that are traced to unauthorized credit card activity or other fraudulent activity, we will recoup these Linden dollars from your Account. The only authorized exchange is the LindeX.

It remains unclear whether the language “not authorized or allowed” outright bans currency exchanges or simply relieves Linden Lab from any legal responsibility, as has been its historic stance.

Weighing the idea of a ban, two sources told SL Business Review that this would not go over well in European markets where many prefer to use debit cards through third-party exchanges. On the other hand, one keen observer of business noted that sole control of the exchange of currency this would generate millions for LL through the Lindex.

SLBR will try to find out more about the exact meaning of this language and the repercussions for exchange owners.

Unlike last year, I actually held a small gathering of good friends and met a gaggle of new ones. Last year, my rez day passed without my noticing. This year, I had become so much more mature and aware in SL that I made sure that someone else hosted my party! (A hat-tip to RedJess for that one).

I thought back to that time around my first rez-day–still wrapped in my noob skin, my 5L Raif hair. I wandered SL naively without an AO.

A noob is like a child. Unless the parent informs them that they need to recognize their rez day and rents out a laser tag arena, who will? In SL, we rarely get the benefit of parental guidance in our early years.

While anyone can all spot a “noob” from a mile a way, I wonder if anyone can determine at which point an avatar exits that stage. Is it the one-year mark? Or is it a more abstract and subjective concept?

For me, I like to believe that each avatar year equals nine human years. Yes, similar to the ratio of dogs to humans.

So this year, I turned eighteen years-old. By that scale, I can play lotto, buy tobacco and vote.

For this blog, I’d like your vote. Also, feel free to comment below:
